General information, not legal advice.

Short answer (checked Oct 19, 2026): Check-MIG is Migración Colombia's free online pre-registration for anyone entering or leaving Colombia through an immigration checkpoint. Migración calls it "de uso no obligatorio" (not mandatory). You can fill it in from 72 hours up to 1 hour before you travel, and the only official form is at apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro. Source: Migración Colombia, CheckMig.

Is Check-MIG free?

Yes. Migración Colombia's page says: "El servicio de CheckMig es completamente gratuito" (the CheckMig service is completely free). (Migración Colombia, CheckMig, checked Oct 19, 2026)

If a site asks you to pay for "Check-MIG", it isn't the official form. The official app is on a .gov.co domain: apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro.

Is Check-MIG mandatory?

Migración Colombia describes it as a "servicio gratuito y en línea, de uso no obligatorio", a free, online, non-mandatory service. It says that sharing your flight and stay details in advance "agiliza sustancialmente la entrevista con el oficial de migración" (substantially speeds up the interview with the immigration officer).1

The US State Department's Colombia page tells travelers to complete it between 1 and 72 hours before the flight. (travel.state.gov, Colombia, checked Oct 19, 2026)

When should I fill it in?

From 72 hours before your trip up to 1 hour before. It covers both entering and leaving Colombia, so you fill in a separate one for each direction.1

What do I need to have ready?

From Migración's "Requisitos" list:

  • a trip booked into or out of Colombia;
  • your flight details (airline, flight number);
  • your biographical details (as in your passport);
  • your contact details;
  • where you're staying in Colombia, if that applies.

The form also asks the reason for your trip and about your health. It takes 2 to 5 minutes, and you can do it in Spanish, English or French.1

How do I fill it in?

Migración's step-by-step, shortened:

  1. Open the official Check-MIG app.
  2. Pick your language, the type of transport and the type of record (entry or exit).
  3. Choose the immigration checkpoint (Puesto de Control Migratorio) you'll pass through, for example the airport you fly into.
  4. Fill in your trip, personal and contact details.
  5. Submit. A confirmation arrives by email almost immediately. You can show it at the checkpoint.

What if I made a mistake or didn't get the email?

You can't edit a form after you send it. If something is wrong, fill in a new one. If the confirmation doesn't reach your inbox, you can download it from the app. Frequent travelers can create an account to save time on later trips.1

What happens after I land?

How long you can stay depends on your nationality and the permit the officer stamps. For visa-exempt visitors that's up to 90 days per entry and 180 days per calendar year. See the 90/180-day rule and extending your stay. When you leave, Migración says to use the same passport you entered with, within the time you were allowed.2

What we couldn't confirm

  • Whether airlines ask for the Check-MIG confirmation at check-in. Migración's page doesn't say, and airline policies vary.
  • Whether the form is identical for land and sea crossings. We only went through the air-travel path.
