Living in Bogotá: A Sourced Overview for Foreigners (2026)
On this page
General information, not legal or financial advice.
Short answer (checked Oct 19, 2026): In mid-October 2026 the median asking rent for an apartment in Bogotá was about COP 3.0–3.2 million a month (ClickCasa, 15,734 listings; Aptologia, 23,106 listings). These are asking prices, not signed contracts. A TransMilenio trip costs COP 3,550 in 2026, and the US State Department rates Colombia Level 3, "Reconsider travel"; Bogotá is not on its Level 4 list. Which neighborhoods do foreigners look at?
No official source ranks Bogotá neighborhoods by how many foreigners live there, so we don't make that claim. What we can show is where the rental listings are. The two listing sites below count the most apartments in the north and northeast of the city: the localidades of Chapinero and Usaquén, and barrios inside them such as Chicó, Chapinero Alto, Santa Bárbara and Cedritos. Teusaquillo, west of Chapinero, has fewer listings at lower prices.
Bogotá is divided into 20 localidades, each split into barrios. Listing sites use both levels, sometimes with different spellings, so the same area can show up under two names.
What does rent cost?
All figures are asking rents (what the listing asks), not the rent people sign for. They usually exclude the building's administración fee. Dollar figures are our conversions at the TRM of COP 3,174.67 per US$ (Oct 17–19, 2026), rounded to US$10.1
| Area | Median asking rent (COP/month) | ≈ US$ | Listings | Source, data date |

The Chapinero localidad median (COP 7.2 million) is much higher than the Chapinero barrio median (COP 2.84 million) because the localidad includes expensive barrios such as Los Rosales, El Nogal and La Cabrera, each with a median of COP 9 million or more on both sites. Ask which "Chapinero" a listing means.
What the law says about rent anywhere in Colombia: no cash deposits for urban housing leases, and yearly increases capped at the previous calendar year's inflation.2 See renting long term for what the law covers.
How much does getting around cost?
A trip on TransMilenio, TransMiCable or the zonal SITP buses costs COP 3,550 in 2026.3 The fare is set in Decreto Distrital 007 de 20264. TransMilenio's January 2026 notice says the 125-minute window for free transfers continues in 2026.5
Electricity, water and gas: unknown. We couldn't open Enel's October 2026 tariff sheet (the PDF returned an access error), and we didn't read the water or gas tariffs.
Is Bogotá safe?
The US State Department rates all of Colombia Level 3, "Reconsider travel" (issued March 31, 2026) for crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping and natural disasters. Bogotá isn't on the Level 4 "Do not travel" list.6
Points the advisory makes about Bogotá specifically:
- Demonstrations "can be frequent in the capital city, Bogotá", and past demonstrations have turned violent.
- Landslides are a risk in mountain cities such as Bogotá.
- Bogotá is at high altitude. The advisory points travelers to the CDC's high-altitude advice.
- In some places, including Bogotá, tap water isn't available every day.
For the whole country it warns against hailing taxis on the street (use a dispatch service or an app), against meeting dating-app contacts in private places, and against street ATMs. The US Embassy is in Bogotá: Calle 24 Bis No. 48-50, +57-601-508-8165.6
In an emergency in Colombia, call 123.
Local crime statistics from the Alcaldía or the Policía: not reviewed for this draft.
Which national rules apply in Bogotá?
The same as in Medellín. Visa-exempt visitors get up to 90 days, extendable to 180 per calendar year (90/180 rule). Longer stays need a visa (digital nomad visa, retirement visa) and, for visas over 3 months, a cédula de extranjería. More than 183 days in any 365 can make you a tax resident.

- Rent by size and furnishing. Not taken for this draft.
- Utilities. Enel's October 2026 tariff PDF didn't open, and we didn't read water or gas tariffs.
