Short answer (checked Oct 19, 2026): The digital nomad visa is a visitor (V) visa from Cancillería that lasts up to 2 years. You need income of at least 3 monthly minimum wages, COP 5,252,715 a month in 2026, in each of the last 3 months. Source: Cancillería, Visa V Nómadas digitales; Decreto 1469 de 2025.
Summary
- The digital nomad visa is a visitor (V) visa issued by Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería). It lasts up to 2 years. (Cancillería, Visa V Nómadas digitales)
- You must show income of at least 3 monthly minimum wages (3 SMLMV) for each of the last 3 months, using bank statements. (Cancillería)
- The 2026 minimum wage is COP 1,750,905 per month (Decreto 1469 de 2025, art. 1). So the 2026 income bar is COP 5,252,715 per month (3 × 1,750,905). That is about US$1,655 a month at the official exchange rate (TRM) of COP 3,174.67 per US$ in force on Oct 19, 2026 (Banco de la República, TRM). The dollar figure moves with the exchange rate. The peso figure is what counts. Rule last checked Oct 19, 2026 on Cancillería – Visa V Nómadas digitales and Decreto 1469 de 2025. If the official page says something different, the official page is right.
- You may not work for Colombian clients or employers. In Cancillería's words, the visa "does not allow working or carrying out paid activity with a legal or natural person domiciled in Colombia." (Cancillería; Resolución 5477 de 2022, art. 46)
- Cancillería's listed fees are US$56 to study the application and US$183 for the visa if approved (or €44 and €141). (Cancillería fee page)
Who can apply for the digital nomad visa?
You need a passport from a country whose citizens do not need a visa for short stays in Colombia. (Cancillería) That list is in Resolución 5488 de 2022, as last changed by Resolución 12189 de 2026. It currently has 100 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and all 27 EU member states. (Res. 5488/2022, art. 3, literal A) See our page on what Resolución 12189 of 2026 changed.
The visa covers two profiles (Cancillería):
- Remote workers and freelancers who work through digital means exclusively for foreign companies, as employees or independents.
- Entrepreneurs starting a digital-content or IT venture.
Document checklist
From Cancillería's requirements for this visa (node 26950) and the general requirements for every visa (Res. 5477/2022, art. 24, "Requisitos generales"):
- Online visa application form.
- Recent digital color photo with a white background, max 300 KB.
- Passport valid for at least 6 months when you apply, with blank pages. Include a copy of the bio-data page.
- If you apply from inside Colombia: a copy of your most recent entry stamp or entry permit.
- Letter in Spanish or English from your foreign employer(s) or client(s) stating the type of relationship and how you are paid. Attach the contract if you have one. Alternatively, show that you are a partner or co-owner of a foreign company, plus a letter saying you do that work remotely.
- Entrepreneurs: a motivation letter that explains the project and the financial and human resources you have or plan to have.
- Bank statements showing at least 3 SMLMV of income in each of the last 3 months (COP 5,252,715 per month in 2026).
- Health insurance valid in Colombia for your whole planned stay, covering accident, illness, maternity, disability, hospitalization, death and repatriation. See health insurance requirements. Family members ("beneficiarios") can apply as dependents of the main holder. (Cancillería)
What are the fees and timing?
| Item | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Application study fee (paid when you apply, non-refundable) | US$56 / €44 | Cancillería fee page; non-refundable per Res. 5477/2022, art. 11 |
| Visa issuance fee (only if approved) | US$183 / €141 | Cancillería fee page |
| Cédula de extranjería (after arrival, see below) | COP 294,000 | Migración Colombia, tarifas 2026 |

Once your application is complete and paid, Cancillería has up to 30 calendar days to decide. It can take longer if other agencies must be consulted. (Res. 5477/2022, art. 13) Rule last checked Oct 19, 2026 on Resolución 5477 de 2022. If the official page says something different, the official page is right.
Agency websites often quote a single "visa price". That price usually bundles the agency's own service fee with the government fees. The government fees are the ones in the table above.
What happens after you get the visa?
- Register and get a cédula de extranjería within 15 calendar days of entering Colombia, or of the visa being issued if you got it while in Colombia. This applies to visas valid for more than 3 months. The digital nomad visa is not on the list of V visas exempt from registration (the exempt ones are Tourism, Business, Crew, Events, and some courtesy visas). (Migración Colombia, Cédula de Extranjería; Res. 5477/2022, art. 118 as modified by Res. 9316/2024) Details: cédula de extranjería guide. Rule last checked Oct 19, 2026 on Migración Colombia – Cédula de Extranjería. If the official page says something different, the official page is right.
- When the visa ends, or is cancelled or terminated, you have 30 calendar days to leave or apply for a new visa. (Res. 5477/2022, arts. 111 and 117)
- Spending more than 183 days in Colombia within any 365-day period can make you a Colombian tax resident, whatever your visa type. See taxes at 183 days.
Do you need the visa at all?
Maybe not, for a short stay. Citizens of visa-exempt countries can work remotely from Colombia without a visa on the entry permit Migración Colombia grants at the border. The conditions: no payments from Colombian companies, and a stay of at most 90 days, extendable to 180 days (continuous or not) per calendar year. (Cancillería, node 26950, NOTA; Res. 5477/2022, art. 46, parágrafo) See the 90/180-day rule.
What we couldn't confirm
- Fee by nationality. Cancillería's fee page shows one fee and no nationality breakdown. We could not confirm that every nationality pays the same (reciprocity rules exist, Res. 5477/2022, art. 4). Check the amount shown in your own application.
- Fee page date. The fee page says it was posted "09/06/2026". We can't tell whether that means June 9 or Sept 6.
- How the income test is applied. For example: gross or net income, mixed currencies, and which exchange rate the consulate uses. Cancillería says only "bank statements" showing 3 SMLMV for the last 3 months.
- Minimum wage litigation. The 2026 minimum wage decree is still under review by the Consejo de Estado. A provisional suspension was revoked, and on Oct 9–10, 2026 the Labor Ministry said COP 1,750,905 remains in force (Portafolio, Oct 10, 2026, press report). A final ruling could change the figure. The 2027 minimum wage is normally set in late December and will change the bar for applications from Jan 1, 2027.
- Processing times in practice. The 30-day legal window is in the resolution. We have no official data on real processing times.
