Short answer (checked Oct 19, 2026): Visa-exempt visitors extend their stay past the entry permit with a PTP (prórroga de permanencia) from Migración Colombia. Your total time still can't go over 180 days in the same calendar year. Source: Migración Colombia, PTP page; Resolución 2061 de 2020.

What is the PTP?

The Permiso Temporal de Permanencia (PTP), also called a prórroga de permanencia, is how visa-exempt visitors extend their stay past the entry permit (PIP) they got at the border. Your total time still cannot exceed 180 calendar days (continuous or not) in the same calendar year. It is governed by Migración Colombia's Resolución 2061 de 2020. (Migración Colombia, PTP; Res. 2061/2020, art. 16)

Note on terms: some English sites call this a "permiso de otorgamiento". That is not the official name. Migración Colombia calls it the PTP / prórroga de permanencia.

Who can apply for a PTP?

How long can you extend?

Your entry permitExtensionSource
Tourism (PT)Up to 90 calendar days (except maritime-transit tour groups)Migración, PTP
Integration and Development (PID)Per Migración's specific table, on the same terms granted at entrysame
Other Activities (POA)Same term as the original permit, once a year, with exceptions (technical assistance, temporary transit, artistic events)same

In all cases the extension cannot take you past 180 days in the calendar year, or past whatever time you have left. (Res. 2061/2020, art. 17, parágrafo 3)

Step by step

We can't file this for you; you file it yourself on Migración's site. Medellín Basic doesn't act for anyone before Migración Colombia or Cancillería.

  1. Apply no later than 5 business days before your PIP expires. (Res. 2061/2020, art. 18; Migración, PTP) Rule last checked Oct 19, 2026 on Migración Colombia – PTP and Resolución 2061 de 2020. If the official page says something different, the official page is right.
  2. Fill in the online Formulario Único de Trámites (FUT). Attach one PDF with an image of your passport, plus any supporting documents for the activity on your original permit.
  3. Allow email notifications to the address you put on the FUT.
  4. Wait for pre-approval, then pay as instructed by email. Payment is online (PSE, credit or debit card) or by bank deposit slip.
  5. Receive the PTP by email about 3 business days after payment.

Things to know

  • Applying is not approval. Migración says the request alone does not grant the extension. You must meet all the requirements, and an unpaid request is treated as withdrawn. (Migración, PTP)
  • Missing the deadline. If you don't request the PTP in time, you must leave before your PIP expires. Otherwise you fall into "permanencia irregular". (Res. 2061/2020, art. 20)
  • Cancellation. A permit can be cancelled by a reasoned administrative act. If that happens you get a safe-conduct (SC-1) and must leave within 5 calendar days. (Migración, PTP)
  • No middlemen needed. Migración Colombia says its procedures do not require intermediaries and are not handled through social media. (Migración Colombia press release on 2026 fees, Feb 20, 2026)

Visa holders are different

A PTP is only for visa-exempt visitors on a PIP. If you hold a visa, Colombia doesn't "extend" it. A visa "prórroga" means issuing a new visa of the same type. (Res. 5477/2022, art. 3, definition of "Prórroga de visa") When a visa ends, you have 30 calendar days to leave or apply for a new one. (Res. 5477/2022, art. 111)

What we couldn't confirm

  • The PID extension table. Migración refers to a "specific table" for PID extensions that we could not read on the page.
  • The full exception list. Migración's page shows Ecuador and EU nationals as exempt from the fee. We did not find any other exceptions.
  • Re-issue fee. The re-issue section of the PTP page still says "Tarifa 2025: $150.000". We assume the 2026 fee is the same COP 150,000 shown in the 2026 fee table, but the page is inconsistent.
  • Real processing times and approval rates. We have no official data.
