General information, not legal advice.

Short answer (checked Oct 19, 2026): If you're married to a Colombian, you apply for the M Cónyuge visa (often searched as the Colombia marriage visa), valid for up to 3 years. If you're in a de facto union (unión marital de hecho) formalized more than 1 year ago, you apply for the M Compañero(a) permanente visa, valid for up to 1 year. Both let you work in any lawful job. Which visa is mine?

If you're married to a Colombian, it's the M Cónyuge. If you're in a de facto union formalized more than 1 year ago, it's the M Compañero(a) permanente.

What documents does the spouse visa need?

Cancillería's specific requirements for the M Cónyuge (Cancillería, Visa M Cónyuge; Resolución 5477 de 2022, art. 67):

  1. An authentic copy of the Colombian marriage civil registration (registro civil de matrimonio), issued within the 3 months before you apply.
  2. A letter signed by your Colombian spouse asking for the visa and stating that you live together. It must give their phone number, physical address and email, with a simple copy of their cédula.
  3. A special power of attorney (poder especial), with signature recognized before a notary or a Colombian consul.
  4. Migration movement certificates from Migración Colombia for both of you.

Cancillería may ask for more proof of the relationship or call you for an interview in person, by video or by phone.

What documents does the partner visa need?

From Cancillería, Visa M Compañero(a) permanente and Resolución 5477 de 2022, art. 68:

  1. An authentic copy of the public deed (escritura pública), court decision or conciliation record declaring the union, or a certificate that it's still in force, issued within the last 3 months. The union must have been formalized more than 1 year before you apply.
  2. If you apply at a Colombian consulate abroad, they accept the document that proves the union under the law of the place where it was declared, apostilled or legalized and translated.
  3. A letter from your Colombian partner asking for the visa and stating that you share a single, constant and stable life together, and committing to tell Cancillería about any change. It must include a copy of their cédula and their address, email and phone.
  4. A special power of attorney, recognized before a notary or Colombian consul.
  5. Migration movement certificates for both of you.

The same rule on extra proof or an interview applies.

What does it cost?

Cancillería's fee pages (both showing "10/06/2026" as their posting date) list:

  • M Cónyuge: USD 56 study fee, USD 279 visa fee (EUR 44 and EUR 191).1
  • M Compañero(a) permanente: the same amounts. That page reads "USD study 279.00 / USD Visa 56.00" but "EURO Study 44.00 / EURO Visa 191.00". Every other M visa fee page we checked (spouse, pensionado) shows USD 56 study and USD 279 visa, so we read the partner page's USD labels as a labeling error on Cancillería's side. Check the amount the platform asks for before you pay.2

Fees in other currencies and at consulates can differ. See the ABC de visas for how the online process and payment deadlines work.

Supporting documents other than your passport must be dated within 3 months of the application. (Resolución 5477 de 2022, art. 20)

What happens after approval?

  • Cédula de extranjería: visas longer than 3 months must be registered with Migración Colombia, and the cédula requested within 15 calendar days of arrival or of the visa being issued in Colombia.3 See the cédula guide.
  • Absence rule: an M visa ends automatically if you're out of Colombia for more than 180 continuous calendar days. (Resolución 5477 de 2022, art. 65)
  • Divorce or separation ends the visa: art. 109 says the end of the marriage or of living together, "por divorcio, o por separación de cuerpos judicial o de hecho", brings the M visa to an early end ("conlleva la terminación anticipada de la vigencia de la visa M"). (Resolución 5477 de 2022, art. 109)
  • Ending at the partner's request: Cancillería can cancel a spouse or partner visa if the Colombian partner asks because of domestic violence, abandonment, de facto separation or failure to meet obligations. (Resolución 5477 de 2022, art. 109, parágrafo 1)
  • Beneficiaries: you can add dependent family members (children up to 25, or a child with a disability) as beneficiaries.4
  • Tax: spending more than 183 days in Colombia in any 365-day period can make you a tax resident. See tax residency.

What we couldn't confirm

  • Why Cancillería's spouse page says 5 years. The binding rule is Resolución 5477 de 2022, art. 90, as modified by art. 76 of Res. 10434 de 2023: "M Cónyuge de nacional colombiano(a) 3 años" and "M Compañero(a) permanente de nacional colombiano(a) 5 años". Cancillería's M Cónyuge information page still says 5 years, which matches the wording before the 2023 change. We found no 2025 or 2026 amendment to art. 90 in Cancillería's compilation. (Res. 5477, art. 90; Cancillería, Visa M Cónyuge)
  • Same-sex couples: Cancillería's pages don't mention them either way, so we make no claim.
  • Marriages registered abroad but not in Colombia: the spouse visa asks for a Colombian marriage registration. We didn't find official guidance for a marriage that's only registered abroad.
