General information. Not legal advice, and not a substitute for official alerts.
Short answer (checked Oct 22, 2026): None of the US, Canadian or UK advisories puts Santa Marta or Magdalena in its highest-risk areas: the US rates all of Colombia Level 3, "Reconsider travel", and Magdalena isn't on its Level 4 list, and Canada and the UK don't list it either. An armed strike shut down the city and the coast road to Tayrona in late September 2026; the president said on Sept 27 it had been lifted. Tayrona National Park is closed for its scheduled rest until Nov 2, 2026. Sources: travel.state.gov; travel.gc.ca; GOV.UK; US Embassy alerts; Presidencia, Sept 27, 2026; Parques Nacionales.
If the official page says something different, the official page is right.
Is Santa Marta safe right now?
Next check: Nov 3, 2026, when Tayrona reopens.
As of Oct 22, 2026 there's no active official warning for Santa Marta: the US Embassy's last Santa Marta alert was Sept 23, and the three advisories don't single it out. The Embassy's October alerts are about protests in Bogotá and a tsunami warning on Oct 9. (US Embassy in Colombia, alerts, read Oct 22, 2026) No official page we read says the risk has ended.
What is in place right now, from official sources:
- Extra security forces. On Sept 27, 2026 the president said 2,500 members of the security forces were in the area, with air support, road checkpoints, night checkpoints, patrols and security convoys for businesses and transport.3
- Tayrona is closed from Oct 19 to Nov 2, 2026 and reopens to visitors on Nov 3. This is one of the park's three scheduled closures a year (February, June and October–November), agreed with the Arhuaco, Kogui, Wiwa and Kankuamo peoples. Parques Nacionales gives conservation and the indigenous Nabbatashi period as the reasons.4
- The country-wide advisories below still apply to Santa Marta as they do to the rest of Colombia.

What was the Santa Marta paro armado in September 2026?
An illegal armed group called an "armed strike" (paro armado) after security forces killed its second-in-command, and the city and the coast road east of it were disrupted for several days.
- Sept 21: the US Embassy, citing Colombian authorities, reported blockades on the Troncal del Caribe (Route 90) at Barrio 11 de Noviembre in Santa Marta and disrupted traffic toward Guachaca, "due to conflict between the Colombian Armed Forces and illegal armed groups". It told US citizens to avoid that stretch of Route 90, the Quebrada del Sol / Guachaca rural area, and the approaches to Tayrona by that highway.5
- Sept 22: the president ordered more military and police presence in Santa Marta after the Autodefensas Conquistadoras de la Sierra Nevada announced the strike.6
- Sept 23: a second US Embassy alert covered Santa Marta and nearby parts of Magdalena and La Guajira, including Route 90 through Palomino, the approaches to Tayrona and the Zona Bananera. It said, citing Colombian authorities, that the group had announced a 72-hour transport blockade, a shutdown of civilian activity and a curfew, and that vehicles had been burned and businesses threatened and shot at. Authorities had restricted passengers on motorcycles and suspended school activities in affected areas. Simón Bolívar International Airport was open, and so were the road to the airport and the road toward Barranquilla.7
- Sept 27: the president said the strike had been lifted, five blocked points on the Santa Marta–Riohacha road had been cleared, and 23 people had been arrested in operations against the group (18 in Magdalena, 5 in La Guajira).3
What the Embassy told US citizens to do during the strike: avoid unrest, roadblocks, crowds and security operations; shelter in place if you hear gunfire or meet large groups; don't confront armed people; follow local authorities and watch local media for road closures.7
Is Santa Marta safe for tourists and Americans? What the advisories say
None of the three puts Santa Marta or Magdalena in its highest-risk areas.
| Government | Colombia overall | Santa Marta / Magdalena | Page date |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Level 3, "Reconsider travel" (crime, terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, natural disasters) | Not on the Level 4 list, which names Arauca, Cauca (except Popayán), Valle del Cauca (except Cali), Norte de Santander and the area within 10 km of the Venezuelan border | Issued Mar 31, 2026 |
| Canada | "Exercise a high degree of caution" due to high levels of crime | Magdalena isn't in its "avoid all travel" or "avoid non-essential travel" lists | Last updated Oct 14, 2026 |
| United Kingdom | No country-wide level; lists areas it advises against | Magdalena isn't on its "all but essential travel" list | Updated Oct 15, 2026 |

The UK says pickpocketing, mugging and armed robbery are a problem "especially in major cities, including Bogotá, Medellín, Cali and the Caribbean coast".8 The UK also warns that travelling against FCDO advice can invalidate your travel insurance.9

Is it safe to go to Tayrona, Palomino and Minca?
Tayrona is closed until Nov 2, 2026. For the drive, Canada still warns that Route 90 can be closed by roadblocks with little warning.410
Route 90 east of Santa Marta is the road that was blocked in September, and Canada still flags it. Canada's advisory says that in the past, parts of the Troncal del Caribe (Route 90), the road to Tayrona, have been closed due to roadblocks, and that more closures "could occur with little warning" if there are new protests or security operations.10
Before you go:
- Call 767 from a mobile phone for the Highway Police's road-closure line (Spanish only). (Canada's advisory, same source)
- Travel by day. US government staff may not travel by road outside cities at night, and the State Department says you "should follow these same precautions".2
- Check that Tayrona is open. It's closed Oct 19 to Nov 2, 2026.4
None of the official pages we read mention Minca specifically.
Is Santa Marta safe at night?
The advisories don't single out Santa Marta, but all three give the same night-time advice for Colombia:
- US: "Travel only during daylight hours" is on its list for anyone who decides to travel to Colombia.2
- Canada: avoid walking alone in isolated areas and travelling alone after dark, and use ATMs inside banks or malls during business hours.10
- UK: take care on city streets after dark or when you're on your own.8
On taxis, all three agree: don't hail one on the street. Use an app, a dispatch service, or a taxi your hotel or restaurant books. The State Department says US citizens "have been killed during robberies while using taxis hailed off the street".2108
Do the dating-app and drugging warnings apply to Santa Marta?
Yes. The warnings cover all of Colombia. The State Department says "many U.S. citizens in Colombia have been drugged, robbed, and even killed by Colombian criminals posing as dates", and advises meeting in a busy public place, a video call first, and never leaving drinks unattended.2 Canada says scopolamine is put in food, drinks, hand sanitizer and make-up, and that incidents happen most often in larger cities, "including but not limited to" Bogotá, Cartagena and Medellín.10 The UK says criminals work in teams and use dating apps to find foreigners travelling alone.8
More detail on these warnings: Medellín safety and the State Department advisory.
Are the beaches and boat trips safe?
Canada names Santa Marta, with Cartagena and San Andrés, as a place where unlicensed tour boats have had accidents. It also says some beaches are unsupervised, many have no warning flags, and riptides are common.10 The State Department says the seas off the northern coast can be dangerous for small boats in December and January, and that US citizens have died in boating accidents. Check for life jackets before you board.2
The rainy season runs October to November in the US advisory.2 October and November are normally rainy months on the Caribbean coast, but IDEAM, Colombia's weather agency, forecasts below-normal rain for much of the Caribbean region during the 2026 El Niño, while warning that isolated heavy downpours can still happen. (IDEAM, Oct 8, 2026, read Oct 22, 2026)
Is Santa Marta safer than Cartagena or Medellín?
We can't tell you, and no government advisory ranks them. All three cities sit under the same country-wide US Level 3 and Canadian "high degree of caution", and none of their departments (Magdalena, Bolívar, Antioquia) is on the US Level 4 list.210 In September 2026, only Santa Marta had an armed strike and US Embassy alerts. We haven't compared official crime statistics for the three cities. See living in Cartagena and Medellín safety for what the advisories say about each.

What we couldn't confirm
- The exact end of the strike. The president said on Sept 27 that it had been lifted. Press reports give Sept 25, but we didn't find that date on an official page.
- Santa Marta crime statistics. We didn't verify official 2026 data (Policía Nacional, Medicina Legal or the Alcaldía), so we don't compare neighborhoods or cities by crime.
- Whether the extra security forces are still deployed at the Sept 27 level.
- Minca and the Sierra Nevada. No official page we read mentions them.
- Other governments' advisories (Australia, Germany and others) weren't checked.
